Impressive castle. Beautifully placed on a hill, you spot it even as you exit the train station. Many steep steps. Imagine it was built 400 years ago - wow!Full review by 534MariaS

I am interessted in the relative accessability of Himeji vs Matsumoto. After dealing with some health issues, mobility can be a challenge for me. I'm fine walking, but something requiring balance, like steps, can present a problem. During my last stay in Japan I visited Matsumoto Castle with its very steep, very smooth, wooden steps, that you have to climb in your socks because of the historic wood. I managed to make my way up without making a spectacle of myself. However, then I had to realize the the actuall problem was the way down; narrow, slippery steps - more than 60cm high After somhow making it down, I really never need something like that ever again. So, I would like to know, from people who visited both castles; how do they compare in that regard?

I think they are similar. My suggestion is to avoid the steps, especially there can be a lot of people at Himeji, making going up and down the steps even more difficult. I personally think that the view from Himeji is not particularly spectacular. I am more impressed with the views looking at the castle from outside.

Hi. Four of us will arrive by cruise ship at Himeji Port at 10 am in early March. What would be the best way to visit the Himeji Castle independently? I have read that we can catch a bus from the port.

Not sure about how, I assume taxi . My only advice would be , as you’re going at blossom time as did we this year, to arrive as early as you can as queues build up quickly and entrance was suspended for a while at lunchtime because of the crowds . The views from outside however are the best, and don’t miss the adjacent gardens that you can include on a combi ticket.

I know this has been asked and answered several times before, but I feel like it needs to be updated given that Japan just opened up recently from Covid closures. Are there luggage storage lockers as we are planning to stop on our way from Kyoto to Hiroshima? How much are they?

The fastest, simplest, and comfortable way to travel from Kyoto to Himeji is by shinkansen via Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen lines. There are direct service, but it depend on the time of your departure. If you missed it, you need to transfer at Shin-Osaka station or Shin-Kobe station. If you don't mind with slight longer trip, you can use Special Rapid Service on JR Kyoto line.
