Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who had set an ambitious target of reducing accidents by 50% when he had first assumed office, conceded that the situation has worsened.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted lane indiscipline as India's leading road accident cause, citing personal fines as an example. He emphasized that chaotic driving, not speed, is the primary danger and advocated for early road safety education.

He also cited official data saying Delhi is the worst affected city with over 1,400 deaths, followed by Bengaluru with 915 deaths.

High speed is not such a big issue worldwide, but lane indiscipline is a serious problem in India, Gadkari said.
