Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel laurate María Corina Machado has arrived in Oslo, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, hours after her daughter accepted this year’s Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf in the Norwegian capital.

María Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition leader who was awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, did not attend the ceremony in Oslo, Norway.

The 58-year-old engineer had secretly left Venezuela for Oslo in defiance of a decade-long travel ban imposed by authorities and after spending more than a year in hiding.
