The West Bengal government has appealed to the Calcutta High Court for the death penalty for Sanjoy Roy, convicted in the RG Kar hospital doctor's rape and murder case, after the trial court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Judge Anirban Das said crime did not fall under “rarest of the rare” category as justification for not giving death penalty to Sanjay Roy.

Kolkata: The Additional District and Sessions Court in Kolkata's Sealdah on Monday sentenced convict Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case to life imprisonment till death. The court observed that it was not "the rarest of the rare" case.

Roy was declared guilty by the court on Saturday under Sections 66 (rape), 64 (causing injury resulting in death) and 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)
