A winter storm will deliver a punch of snow to millions in the Northeast after it dumps more white stuff on the snowy Midwest.
AccuWeather meteorologist Alyssa Glenny told Newsweek that on average, Porter sees 11.6 inches of snow throughout December, so it came within a half-foot of hitting amounts usually seen for the entire month. In a year, Porter sees more than 65 inches of snow.
Hazardous winter weather was expected through early Wednesday, according to forecasters. The storm had dropped a wintry mix of precipitation across the Midwest overnight.
In addition to Cumbria and Lancashire, parts of Northumberland and Scotland were also hit by Storm Desmond. According to Northumberland County Council, the worst hit areas were Corbridge, Hexham and Haydon Bridge after the River Tyne breached its banks.
The D.C. area may experience its first snow of the season Friday — at least technically. A storm system sliding across the Southeast may throw enough moisture north into cold air entrenched over the D.
Early-season snowfall has been sparse and infrequent, but Steamboat is forecast to receive 30 inches from Friday through Sunday, with other northern mountains receiving a foot or more. The central mountains can expect 6-12 inches, while the southern mountains should receive 3-8 inches.
Alpena Power Co. argued the ice storm was an "act of God," and it shouldn't have to compensate customers after long outages. Now, it will pony up nearly $645,000 in bill credits.
