When you need to hit the road and winter weather makes for a tricky commute, driving can be dangerous. Rick August, owner of Smart Drive Test, joins FOX Weather to talk about some tips for driving safely so you can avoid a crash or delays during winter weather.

On Friday at 10:08 p.m. EST an updated winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service in effect until Saturday at 5 a.m. EST for Leelanau, Benzie and Manistee counties.

Hazardous winter weather was expected through early Wednesday, according to forecasters. The storm had dropped a wintry mix of precipitation across the Midwest overnight.

At 12:03 p.m. on Thursday, the NWS Raleigh NC released an updated winter weather advisory valid from Friday midnight until Saturday midnight. The advisory is for Person, Granville, Vance, Warren, Halifax,

On Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. EST the National Weather Service released an updated winter weather advisory in effect until Thursday at 7 a.m. EST for Alger, Luce and Schoolcraft counties.

AccuWeather meteorologist Alyssa Glenny told Newsweek that on average, Porter sees 11.6 inches of snow throughout December, so it came within a half-foot of hitting amounts usually seen for the entire month. In a year, Porter sees more than 65 inches of snow.

Several inches of snow are expected to fall on Dec. 2 in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with freezing rain and iced-over roads in some areas.

Forecasters expected the storm to track up the Eastern Seaboard Monday night into Tuesday, leaving as much as a foot of snow in parts of the Northeast United States.
