Former Saints WR coach and recent Broncos pass game coordinator John Morton will be hired as the new offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions

Campbell hired Morton as a senior offensive assistant that season. It just so happened to be Johnson’s first year as an offensive coordinator and play caller. He was only 35 at the time. Considering Campbell had fired Anthony Lynn just one year into his Detroit tenure, it was crucial for him to get the next hire right.

The deals are signed and the Lions have officially announced that Morton and Sheppard will replace Johnson and Glenn, ushering in a new era for the franchise.

The Detroit Lions appear to be preparing for the loss of pass game coordinator Tanner Engstrand, who is the lead candidate to become the New York Jets’ next offensive coordinator. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero,

The Lions are promoted linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator. Sheppard, 37, joined Dan Campbell’s initial Lions staff as outside linebackers coach in 2021 and has overseen the entire unit the past three seasons.

There are still some holes on the staff to fill. But the two biggest questions have been answered, with the Detroit Lions landing on John Morton as offensive coordinator and Kelvin Sheppard as defensive coordinator.
