Federal authorities are asking questions as to how the collision between an American Airlines flight and a military helicopter could have occurred.

A helicopter and another aircraft collided near Reagan National Airport Wednesday evening, two people familiar with the incident said, drawing a large emergency response. The D.C. fire department said on X that a small aircraft was reported down in the Potomac River near the airport but did not immediately provide more details of what happened.
