Cans of tuna sold by major grocery chains in 27 states have been recalled by the Tri-Union Seafoods company over concerns a manufacturing defect with their easy-pull tab lids could allow the clostridium botulinum toxin, which causes botulism, to contaminate the product.

The company said that the easy-pull can lid “encountered a manufacturing defect that may compromise the integrity of the product seal (especially over time), causing it to leak or worse, be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.”

Trader Joe's, Costco, and Walmart are among the retailers and brands caught up in the massive recall. Botulism is a rare but serious illness.
