Almost a century after the colossal squid was first discovered, a juvenile was filmed and photographed in its natural habitat last month.

On March 9, 2025, scientists captured the first-ever footage of a colossal squid in the wild. The 30 cm juvenile was filmed 600 meters deep near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic. It was part of a 35-day expedition aboard the R/V Falkor (too) for the global Ocean Census project.
