Fans of the original Broadway musical will recall that it was loosely adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch. The novel, in turn, is a spiritual prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the 1939 film adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It’s adaptations all the way down!
Elphaba doesn’t die at the end of Wicked: For Good. When Dorothy throws a pail of water at the witch, it seems like she’s really melting. However, it’s revealed that Fiyero had helped her fake her death by putting her in a trapped door. The two escape Oz to live a fulfilling life together, while Glinda keeps it a secret from all the citizens.
