A Chicago police officer accidentally discharged a firearm, but nobody was hit, while placing offenders in custody following a foot chase early Thursday morning on the city's West Side, according to the Chicago Police Department.

A man is in custody on Thursday after he allegedly hit a CPD officer during a multi-county pursuit in a stolen car. According to officials from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, the chase began after the driver of a stolen Volkswagen fled from Chicago police as they attempted a traffic stop.

An armed robbery that led to a police pursuit early Thursday morning has now launched an investigation with the Civilian Office of Police Accountability — after a responding officer's gun went off. It appears what started the chain of events was an armed robbery in Gage Park in the early morning hours.
