Harry Brook has posted his seventh test century and shared a 151-run fifth-wicket partnership with Ollie Pope which changed the course of the first test between England and New Zealand on its second day.

Brook top-scored with 171 as the tourists ran up 499 on day three at Hagley Oval, but Woakes delivered the killer blow.

Harry Brook rode his luck all the way to a game-changing century as England fought their way back from top-order trouble on day two in Christchurch. After bowling out the Black Caps for 348 in the morning session, England were up against it at 71 for four only to reach stumps having reclaimed the upper hand at 319 for five.

New Zealand were hurting at the fielding errors with Brook adding 153 after he was first dropped on 18. "Fielding's something we pride ourselves on and that's the part that hurts," said seamer Matt Henry.

Debutant Jacob Bethell followed suit scoring just 10 runs as Joe Root too registered a duck with England reeling on 45 for three.
