N.C. State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson has been named head coach at Marshall. Gibson's hiring Sunday came less than a hour after Thundering Herd coach Charles Huff was announced as the new coach at Southern Miss.

In a move announced mere minutes after former Marshall head coach Charles Huff was officially named to the same position at Southern Miss, the Thundering Herd announced his replacement -- Tony Gibson.

Huff and Marshall had been heading for a divorce for months, but there were few hard feelings as both coach and program turned the page.

Shortly after Southern Mississippi announced the hiring of Charles Huff, Marshall University confirmed that Boone County native Tony Gibson is the 32nd head coach in program history. Gibson will be introduced at a press conference at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, in Encova Auditorium at the Brad D. Smith Center for Business and Innovation.

The Van, WV native has been the defensive coordinator for the NC State Wolfpack the last six years and it will be his first head coaching job. It’s expected to be a six year contract to lead the Herd.
