Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.

White smoke billowed from the top of the Vatican Thursday morning as it was confirmed that a new pope was elected. On day two of the conclave, the Cardinals elected Robert Prevost, the first American pope in the history of the Catholic Church.

At the end of each voting round, black smoke means a new pope has not yet to be selected, while white smoke indicates a new pope has been chosen.

White smoke streamed from a chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, signaling to the world that the 133 cardinals inside have elected a new pope. But we don't yet know his identity.
