Both the college football rankings and the College Football Playoff picture took a sharp turn on Saturday. More than a half-dozen ranked teams took losses, leaving voters — and the selection committee — with some tough decisions when it comes to sorting out the new top 25.

The Crimson Tide are also the second-highest ranked SEC team in the latest AP Poll, trailing only the No. 3 ranked Texas Longhorns. Texas sits behind only the Oregon Ducks and Ohio State Buckeyes, which are at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Following upset losses to unranked opponents, Alabama and Mississippi both fell out of the top 10 in the AP Top 25 poll when the latest rankings were released on Sunday.

A pair of top-10 teams from the SEC lost to unranked teams on Saturday, part of a day of upsets up and down the AP Top 25 poll that reshaped the new rankings Sunday.

It did not include Alabama or Mississippi of the SEC, both of which suffered their third losses of the season last week. That helped place SMU in the ninth spot, joining No. 6 Miami to give the Atlantic Coast Conference two teams in the 12-team bracket.
