France has been forced into a high-alert military response after multiple unidentified drones breached the airspace of one of its most sensitive nuclear facilities. According to AFP, at least five drones were detected flying over the Île Longue submarine base in Brittany on December 4—the home port of France’s nuclear ballistic missile submarines.
The vessel, LÉ William Butler Yeats, did not shoot down the drones but also lacked any capability to disable them, and a nearby Irish Air Corps aircraft also did not get involved. Deck lookouts spotted the drones because their lights were on as they flew.
