As I write this, it’s hunting a Mankey outside of Viridian City in Pokémon Red or Blue (I can’t tell which). It’s using the new Claude 3.7 Sonnet “hybrid reasoning model” and shows its thinking in a side window.

In a blog post published Monday, Anthropic said that it tested its latest model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, on the Game Boy classic Pokémon Red. The company equipped the model with basic memory, screen pixel input, and function calls to press buttons and navigate around the screen, allowing it to play Pokémon continuously.

Claude 3.7 Sonnet is the latest AI model to play video games successfully. Last March, researchers used ChatGPT to play classic first-person shooter Doom, managing to get to the last room in the game once.
