More than $4.3 billion has flowed into General Motors' legacy campus in Spring Hill since 2021, as GM geared up to make the all-electric Cadillac Lyriq SUV and partnered with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution to build a 2.8 million-square-foot battery plant. That battery joint venture, named Ultium Cells, now will make a second kind of EV battery.
GM has announced that a retooling of the Ultium Spring Hill battery plant in Tennessee will begin this year to start producing cost-effective LFP cells by 2027.
Ultium Cells LLC will upgrade its manufacturing plant in Tennessee to produce lower-cost lithium iron phosphate – or LFP – battery cells.
