The UK government is scaling back planned welfare reforms in a bid to fight off a backbench rebellion.

But the longer term issue of how the state can afford Britain’s ballooning welfare bill remains, with the number of disability benefits claimants set to rise significantly over the next 10 years. Without reform, spending on working-age health and disability benefits is expected to hit £66bn by 2029-30, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
