Alaskans remember William Seward as the secretary of state who bought Alaska for $7.2 million, but acquiring Russian claims to America's Northwest was only one of his many important achievements.

It was under Russian control till 1867 when Russian Emperor Tsar Alexander II, sold it to the US for $7.2 million under the deal signed with William H. Seward, the 24th US Secretary of State.
