Why does the Super Bowl use Roman numerals?The use of Roman Numerals began with the fifth edition, Super Bowl V, in 1971. They remained every year up until Super Bowl 50, which would have been Super Bowl L, and returned the following year.
This year it's Super Bowl LIII, meaning it's the 53rd Super Bowl. The letters are Roman numerals – the L stands for 50 and the III stands for 3. Where: The Super Bowl venue changes each year.
