Rep. Chris England, D-Tuscaloosa, is sponsoring a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow Alabama voters to decide whether to keep the death penalty. England said he opposes the death penalty fundamentally and because of inequities in the judicial system and in the way it is carried out.

A bill was recently prefiled in the Alabama Legislature that, if passed, would give the public a chance to abolish the death penalty across the state. Rep. Chris England,
