The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is warning parents about scammers using the fear of child abduction to gain sensitive information.

Earlier this week, the California Highway Patrol sent an Amber Alert push notification to phones in the Los Angeles area about a 14-year-old girl that authorities believed had been abducted. But instead of conveying vital information that could help locate the victim within the notification itself,

The California Highway Patrol is warning of an AMBER Alert scam where individuals are posing as fake representatives and asking parents to enroll their children in the phony Amber Alert system.

The scammers offer to "register" children for the AMBER Alert system, ask for confidential information and try to meet at victims' homes, officials said.
