North Texas cities in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex have been hit with thousands of layoffs since the start of the year. In the latest, some 1,750 employees will be laid off from their jobs with Dallas-based Southwest Airlines – a roughly 15% corporate workforce reduction for the company.

The company said this departure is separate from the 11 other senior level positions that were laid off in February.

Southwest Airlines said it will cut 1,750 jobs at its Dallas Love Field headquarters, representing about 15% of its corporate workforce.

CEO Bob Jordan calls the cuts "unprecedented in our 53-year history" but said they come at "a pivotal moment as we transform Southwest Airlines."

About 600 of those employees are at the company's Dallas headquarters and maintenance facility. The company said the layoffs will save about $210 million this year.

The reduction also includes leadership positions, Southwest said, adding it would eliminate 11 senior leadership roles — which represents 15% of the company's senior management committee.
