Dozens of gold coins stolen after the 2015 discovery of 1715 shipwreck off the coast of Florida have been recovered after investigators found one of the treasure hunters who made the discovery was allegedly linked to their illegal sale.

A professional treasure hunter has been charged in the theft of the 37 gold coins stolen from the wreckage of the 1715 Treasure Fleet.

After an extensive investigation, Florida officials recovered dozens of gold coins valued at more than $1 million that were stolen from a shipwreck recovery nine years ago.

Several stolen gold coins from the 1715 Treasure Fleet were recovered by authorities, according to a press release published on Tuesday. Florida officials said 37 were seized.

TALLAHASSEE - More than 300 years after Spanish treasure ships sank during a hurricane off Florida's Treasure Coast, 37 stolen gold coins valued collectively at more than $1 million have been recovered.

Investigators will continue searching for the remaining 13 gold coins missing from what the agency said was a “treasure trove” of 101 coins found in 2015.
