Barauni Refinery is an oil refinery located in Begusarai city in the state of Bihar, operated by Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL). It was the dream project of Shri Krishna Singh the first chief minister of Bihar.

Barauni Refinery was dedicated to the nation in 1965. Established in 1964, it is on the Northern banks of the holy Ganges, at Barauni, on the periphery of the district town Begusarai, Bihar. Situated 125 km from Patna, it is also the point where two important railways meet – the Eastern Railways and North Eastern Railways.

Established with a vision to fuel India’s growth, the refinery has witnessed a remarkable journey, expanding its production capacity from 1 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to the current 6 MMTPA.

Dec 20, 2024 · Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is investing over Rs 21,000 crore to expand its Barauni refinery and establish a city gas distribution network in Bihar. The refinery's capacity will increase from 6 to 9 mtpa, including a new petrochemical plant.

Barauni Refinery is a leading refinery in India that uses state-of-the-art eco-friendly technologies to produce green fuels complying with international standards. The refinery won the TPM Excellence award in Category A in 2009 for its operational excellence.

Presently, Barauni Refinery has necessary authorization from CGWA for 15624 m3/day. During, Oct 2021 to March 2022 average fresh water consumption was 14784 m3/day. Application has been submitted to CGWA on 06.04.2022 for enhancement of this limit to 24000 m3/day. Process effluent/any wastewater shall not be allowed to mix with storm water.
