This is a super-cute item I wasn't sure I needed, and now can't do without.
It's more of a "bin" than a can, with a brilliant flat design you'd never guess holds a full gallon. Check out my photos: it fits neatly into the three inch wide countertop area next to my microwave and I am using it all day long as:
• A sleek garbage bin to catch kitchen scraps while I'm cooking.
• A roomy pail for giving my fresh fruit and vegetables a long soap and water soak to remove pesticides (which I do a couple of times a day).
Even though I am not a neatnik, I am easily squicked by slime, especially when I'm cooking, so I love the fact that my hands don't go anywhere near garbage with this pail.
No need to touch the lid -- it stands up neatly in a groove designed for the purpose.
And thanks to the swinging handle, when the bin gets full I just have to tip it to empty.
Before the "can" arrived, I was using a separate plastic bathroom bin for discarded food scraps plus a full size mop bucket as a vegetable soaker -- a combination that monopolized my galley kitchen countertop.
I wasn't sure this would be big enough for all the fruits and vegetables we eat, but when I went to wash my grapes today, I could fit about six pounds in at once.
I am thinking of buying another one of these for the bathroom -- it would be handy for discarded cotton balls, Q-tips, etc., and the fuss free lid is nice for when I need to sharpen eyeliner crayons.

Nothing special for the price
Reviewed on www.walmart.com·Hula
So I kind of like it, but I don't need it. For what this is being sold for, I don't really like it. But I do think I can find other ways to use it. At the end of the day this is just a container with a handle and a loose fitting lid. Certainly it could be useful for collecting food waste in the kitchen and the wide opening makes it quite easy to scrape a plate off into it compared to a round container. I like the stainless exterior but I don't think it is worth the extra price compared to the white ones. I do find it easier to just remove the lid rather than hang it on the side of the can as they show. It is a nice size, not too small, not too big. It is large enough to handle a large meal worth of food scraps without being so large that is takes up a ton of counter space. I don't like that the lid does not seal to the can at all. The lid rattles around and easily moves on top of the can, which does not do a great job of keeping strong odors at bay. To be honest tho, I would rather throw all my scraps in a large bowl and empty it after clean up of the meal is done rather than have this sitting on my counter all the time, and the bowl is easier to clean. I don't really want to collect several days of scraps before I take them out to compost. That is just gets gross to deal with. But as they state in the description, this would be great as caddy for many things. The container is a good weight and even empty would not tip over easily. I think it would be great to use as a trash can when traveling for a long trip. It would hold a great amount of waste and be super easy to empty and wipe out. It could be used to hold snacks for a trip, or things you need to have easy access to. For instance, it would be great for traveling with a pet and could hold small collapsible bowls, a leash, treats, and a small bottle of water. If you need a container this size with a lid, that is fair. Just think about what you need before you buy this.

Not blown away

I think the 1-gallon multipurpose countertop can is fine. I'm not in love with it, but it suits many purposes.

I initially used it to collect the skins, pits, garlic skins, and other items needed to make guacamole. Because of its height and narrowness, it didn't take up much counter space. I decided to try it as a food waste bin, and after adding the guacamole remnants, I placed on the lid. I added more detritus throughout the next couple of days, and the lid seemed to hold in odor. Everything was fine and dandy until I went to empty the container. Because of its design, it was difficult to remove the contents without getting my hand covered in icky, even using a rubber scraper. This was a huge issue for me.

I've since tried it out in other places around the house. Since it's a container, it worked with everything you can imagine using a small trashcan. I thought about using it as a shower caddy. Since there are no drainage holes, I didn't want to deal with leftover water and shampoo/conditioner in the bottom.

The lid does come off quite easily. If you tip it too far, it falls off. The handle works well. It will stay up on its own, which is nice when you carry it, put it down, and then need to pick it back up. There's no fumbling to find the handle. It's lightweight and smooth.

I've used it for small pruning jobs, such as deadheading roses or other flowers. I'm satisfied with how it works. It's not cumbersome. I've also used it to carry small gardening tools, in which case, I don't use the lid.

Overall, it's okay. Personally, I wouldn't rush out to get another one.

Attractive Alternative
Reviewed on www.walmart.com·Swoggs
So my mother has kept egg shells, coffee grounds, & veggie scraps in a used bread bag, lying in her kitchen sink since I can remember! When I saw this bin I wondered why I hadn't thought of this before. Not only is this vessel attractive, it can hold quite a bit of stuff before heading to the compost pile. An important feature is that the top comes off easily for my elderly mother & yet it also seals in odors from the compost.
The outside has a nice, modern stainless steel finish that cleans up nicely & does not show fingerprints. Inside is a durable plastic that does not seem to hold onto odors.
This container could be used for so many things, but is the perfect find for a neat, odor-free way to hold food scraps to later be composted.
I definitely recommend this item!

I really enjoy my countertop...

I really enjoy my countertop can for scraps. It is a clever way to collect beneficial waste to add to my compost pile. Since I have a hose near my compost pile, it is easy to rinse my can out and add it also to the compost pile. Some days it seems I could use two cans. I find that once a day I make my journey to the compost pile with my kitchen scraps. I did notice some fruit flies so I placed an old jar that I punched holes in the metal top big enough for fruit flies. I put water and vinegar in the jar and it works great at killing the fruit flies. It too goes to the compost pile every few days. No more smelly open scrape dish on the counter. Love my countertop can and ease of use.

It is a clever idea to have a nice looking can for on top of your counter for your food waste. It is smoothly made for easy cleaning with no seams in the can interior. I will be using this for my outdoor kitchen which will be very useful to avoid flies near the food when prepping. However, I think it could have been made better by having an attachable lid and making it with a closing feature. The way it is made now, you actually have to pick up the lid and take it on and off. When your hands are messy from prepping food, you don't want to be handling the can lid. Overall, the can is a good idea and will be used a lot.

As mentioned by others this has a loose lid but it actually keeps in smells! I'm using for scraps that go to my chickens and wanted something dogs wouldn't be tempted to grab of counter. I dumped part of a pickle in and forgot about it until I went to add more scraps where strong pickles smell came out after I removed lid. My potential counter surfer is a coonhound so smell control is important and so far she doesn't even seem aware of bucket sitting on counter. Handle makes it easy to run out to chickens. Thinking of getting one for parents RV as mom saves scraps when they visit and have space issues also.

Therefore I turned this table-top composter into my own personal desk trashcan. I think it’s great. Holds any odors well and it’s pretty roomy for what little space it takes up. Looks nice too, and fits into narrow spaces. I would recommend as a table too composter OR a desk trash can!

This is a handy unit to use when peeling, trimming, or otherwise preparing vegetables or fruit for a meal. The lid makes a little tray that you can peel the food item into. Then if it gets full, dump it into the bucket, and continue peeling into the lid. The lid sits flat on top of the bucket if desired, or it can be used vertically like a basketball backboard. There is a groove on the backside of the lid that fits onto the top of the bucket. When you are through with your peeling/trimming, all the waste is inside the bucket and easy to dispose of. The bucket and lid rinse clean easily.

This can is very handy to use for meal prep. You can put all your scraps in it then go dump it in the trash can when you're done prepping instead of back and forth to the trash. If you're looking for a can that you don't need to dump until it's full, this might not be the one for you, as the lid does not have a seal, nor is it hinged. It just sits on top. I don't know how well it contains odors if left sitting as I have just done a meal prep then dumped it. But it's very nice to have and doesn't take up a lot of room on your counter. It's easy to find a spot for and set aside out of the way when not in use, even in my small kitchen with limited counter space.

I love the stainless design on this. It looks nice sitting on my counter, and matches my appliances. I use this for kitchen scraps, and then feed it to my chickens. Afterward, I put their eggs in this to bring back into the house. It works perfect for this! The handle makes it easy to carry back and forth. The lid seems sort of flimsy, but I think that's the point - to let out a small amount of air at a time. It does have a place to rest the lid on while you put food into it, but i just remove it.
My only complaint is that it isn't dishwasher safe.

You can set things on the lid and then lift it to slide them down into the container. The lid comes off easily so keep that in mind. Length wise you can set it behind a dish drying rack and still have space. It helps with odors so using it for composting or fermenting is good. It is meant for lightweight items if you plan to use the handle.

Now we have this nice stainless steel container on our countertop that holds a grocery bag for our garbage. It also has a lid to control any odors. We like it very much.
