Orthodox Sunday, also known as the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, is celebrated on the first Sunday of Great Lent in the Eastern Orthodox Church. It commemorates the restoration of the veneration of icons in 843 AD after the period of Byzantine Iconoclasm. This event affirmed the Church’s teaching that icons are not idols but windows to the divine.
