On the morning of 30 January 1649, King Charles I made his way from St James’s Palace to The Banqueting House, where a scaffold was erected for his execution. He had been charged with high treason at the end of the Civil War and his Death Warrant had been signed by 59 commissioners. For the next 11 years, England would have no monarch.
