On today's "From the Forest" we're talking about shelf fungus, also known as bracket fungus. These fungi produce spores above the ground and are known as polypores (many pores). Typically, they either don’t have a stem or have a short lateral stem. Shelf fungus is woody or leathery, and the woody shelves may live for many years producing concentric annual growth rings.
