This week we explore one of the sky’s most fascinating stars – Mira, the famous long-period variable star in the constellation Cetus. Join EarthSky's Deborah Byrd and Bob King - aka AstroBob - as they explain how Mira “breathes,” expanding and contracting over a 332-day cycle. Most of the year, this star is invisible to the unaided eye. But, near maximum, it pops into view. That's what's happening now. Mira is heading toward its peak. We’ll show you exactly how to find it in the evening sky and

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from this week's high sun activity impacted Earth's magnetic field last night, bringing strong geomagnetic storming. This painted the skies with auroras, visible even under the bright glare of 2025's brightest moon. And with more major eruptions in the past 24 hours, more auroras are expected in the coming days. After several days of low sun activity, levels have now jumped to moderate, with several M flares popping off earlier today. Plus! Here on Earth, we reached a minor geomagnetic storm threshold at 21 UTC on June 15. Did anybody see auroras? Let us know in the comments. Last night’s geomagnetic storm has nothing to do with the M flares. It takes a few days for activity on the sun to travel to us. Instead, the geomagnetic storm was due to the arrival of what’s called a co-rotating interaction regio

All the stars we can see are moving on their own journeys around our Milky Way Galaxy. But they are so distant that they appear fixed to us, with their motions practically undetectable. But that's not the case for all stars! Meet 61 Cygni, or the Flying Star. It's actually a binary or double star, and its name says it all - it seems to fly through the night sky! As you can see below, its position in the sky changes noticeably over the course of a few years. That's not because it's especially fas

Severe geomagnetic storming expected tonight! 🌍 We expect the arrival of at least 5 CMEs, great burps of material from the sun. This week's X- and M-flare activity released these chunks of sun-stuff. Auroras are expected across northern latitudes, with the NOAA forecasting up to G4 (severe) conditions for this weekend. Should you be afraid? No. So far, this is ordinary behavior from our sun at Solar Maximum, which happens about every 11 years. Read the sun news! https://earthsky.org/sun/sun-new

A cool cosmic coincidence kicks off 2026! The first full moon of the year — a supermoon — will coincide with Earth’s closest approach to the sun, known as perihelion, on and around January 2–3. That means the Earth, moon, and sun will all be unusually close and aligned as the new year begins. This rare event hasn’t happened since January 1912 and won’t occur again in our lifetimes. Join us on EarthSky’s livestream at 12 p.m. CST (18 UTC) on Wednesday, December 31, to explore this unique celestia

We reported yesterday that the monster sunspot region AR3664 has rotated back onto the Earth-facing sun. Now labeled AR3697, it's already firing on all cylinders! Yesterday, it released its 2nd X flare since returning. The SOHO spacecraft's LASCO C3 instrument captured this view of plasma blasted into space by the flare, which may give Earth a glancing blow late tomorrow. LASCO C3 also saw Venus creep into frame, after a few weeks visible in the wider field of view of LASCO C2. Read the sun news

We're watching simultaneous prominences on both the north and south poles of the sun. GOES-18 imagery shows the 2 in their magnetic dances. We also remember 35 years ago today, March 13, 1989. A famous event – the March 1989 geomagnetic storm – temporarily brought down electrical service in Quebec, Canada, and caused significant interference to the United States power grid. Since then, utility companies in North America and northern Europe – and elsewhere on the globe – have implemented programs

Hello star people! Could the universe’s expansion be slowing down? After two-and-a-half decades of believing the galaxies are speeding apart at an ever-faster rate, a new study suggests the rate of expansion might be slowing down. EarthSky's Deborah Byrd teams up Dr. Sara Webb, astrophysicist and science communicator at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, to explain what this new possibility could mean for our understanding of the cosmos. The livestream starts at noon CST (18 UTC) o

Aurora watchers, get ready. A solar wind stream is on its way to Earth. The giant coronal hole continues to spew out lots of fast solar wind in Earth’s direction. The speed of the solar wind at Earth has started to increase, slowly, but as of this writing (11 UTC on December 4) the full stream of solar stuff is not yet blasting Earth’s magnetic field. The stream is expected to reach us by midday UTC today (December 4). It’s expected to cause a G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm. The rush of solar p

A huge eruption took place on the northwest limb (edge) from the now departed region AR3372. Because the region was partially blocked by the sun, it was most certainly larger than an M4.1! It also launched a beautiful coronal mass ejection (CME) and produced a solar particle storm. But don't worry, the CME is not Earth-directed. In addition, a filament erupted in the northeast yesterday. The dark material ejected indicates that the erupting material was cooler than its surrounding. The event is

Is the sun waking up? We've been waiting for a large coronal hole - which has been spraying fast solar wind our way - to light up Earth's magnetic field, giving us great auroras. Looks like the action expected last night didn't pan out. Meanwhile - flare-wise - the sun itself has been relatively quiet. But that might be about to change! We see a lot of activity on the sun's edges now, including a new region on the sun's northeast limb that has been popping off flares and jets for the last 24 hou

The sun released a huge prominence eruption at about 8:30 UTC on December 30. It came from an erupting filament near the southeast limb (edge). It quickly expanded into a massive structure longer than 200 Earths lined up, or about 800,000 miles (1.3 million kilometers). That’s long … about as long as the sun is wide. This eruption released a large blob of solar plasma or a coronal mass ejection (CME). More than likely it’s not Earth-directed, given the eruption’s location. While current flare ac
